Crazy Frog History
For the more intrigued browser, you may be interested to know how the Crazy Frog came into existance? Well that's exactly what we're going to explain in this section.
Back in 1997, a 17 year old Swede named Daniel Malmedahl, recorded himself impersonating the sounds of internal combustion engines. He posted this on a website and later caught the attention of a Swedish television researcher who convinced him to perform the sound live on air. After Daniel's debut on television, recordings of his performance began appearing on P2P file sharing networks and various other sites under the filename of "2TAKTARE.MP3" ('Tvataktare' is Swedish for 'Two Stroker').
The sound effect that Daniel created was quickly spread over the internet in the form of Flash animations, that as is now so typical, spread virally across the net.
Near the end of 2000, a fellow Swede, Erik Wernquist, encountered the sound effect and was inspired to create a 3D animation to accompany it, known as "The Annoying Thing". Using the LightWave 3D Modelling Applicaton, Erik produced the animation and posted it on his website. The animation quickly became a popular attraction at Erik's web site, but the sound was credited to "Anonymous". Eventually Daniel discovered that his impersonations had been used in a well known animation, and he contacted Erik, supposedly giving an on the spot performance to confirm that he did indeed create the effect. After convincing Erik that he was the owner of the effect, credit was given to Daniel for his creation.
In mid 2001, the animation and sound effect were broadcast for the first time ever on two Belgian commercials for the Ringtone Europe and Jamster België (they have sinced merged to form Jamba!).
The Crazy Frog
The Crazy Frog, officially named "The Annoying Thing" is an anthropomorphic amphibian, designed to be frog-like in appearance. The Frog typically wears just a white motorcylce helmet with an unfastered chinstrap, a leather jacket and googles. He has webbed toes and the iris in his left eye is much larger than that of the iris in the right. He has teeth missing and has a undetailed but very controversial genitalia.
In the first animation released, the Crazy Frog makes the hand movements required to turn the twistgrip of a motorcycle to apply acceleration, whilst making the sound of an engine ignition. Once the imaginary engine has been started, the Crazy Frog begins to levitate as exhaust fumes are discharged from his body. He then disappears into the distance at high speed.
